衞三畏

衞三畏（Samuel Wells Williams；1812年9月22號—1884年2月16號）係美國語言學家、傳教士同中國通。十九世紀來過大清。

屋企

衞三畏生喺美國紐約州Utica，入讀過同州Troy嘅Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute。畢業後，佢做過該校敎授。

來華

1833年6月15號，佢重係廿零歲，佢坐船到中國。佢係負責廣東American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions印務。1837年，佢坐Morrison Incident到日本。官方來講，佢係帶一啲日本水手回國，亦順道要求政府開放門戶畀美國貿易，之但係唔成功。

1845年11月20號，佢同Sarah Walworth結婚。1848年到1851年，佢係The Chinese Repository編輯，本嘢係喺中國幾出名嘅西方報紙。1853年，佢跟Matthew Calbraith Perry去日本，做翻譯。

1855年，佢任職United States Legation to China嘅祕書。呢段期間，1856年，佢寫咗本英華分韻撮要（A Tonic Dictionary Of The Chinese Language In The Canton Dialect），關於廣東話。佢喺傾天津條約，要求寬宏對待唐人同外國人基督徒。

1860年，去咗北京，做美國美國駐華公使館秘書。佢1876年10月25號唔做。由1833年到1876年，佢來咗中國43年。1875年，佢將創世紀同瑪竇福音譯做日文，不過都未印就畀大火燒晒。

1877年，佢返返美國，喺耶魯大學做中文同中國文學系首席敎授。1881年2月3號，衞三畏做咗美國聖經學會阿頭。

1884年2月16號，衞三畏死。
