The Vector 2022 skin as the default in two weeks?

Hello. I'm writing on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Web team. In two weeks, we would like to make the Vector 2022 skin the default on this wiki.

We have been working on it for the past three years. So far, it has been the default on more than 30 wikis, including sister projects, all accounting for more than 1 billion pageviews per month. On average 87% of active logged-in users of those wikis use Vector 2022.

It would become the default for all logged-out users, and also all logged-in users who currently use Vector legacy. Logged-in users can at any time switch to any other skins. No changes are expected for users of these skins.

About the skin

[Why is a change necessary] The current default skin meets the needs of the readers and editors as these were 13 years ago. Since then, new users have begun using Wikimedia projects. The old Vector doesn't meet their needs.

[Objective] The objective for the new skin is to make the interface more welcoming and comfortable for readers and useful for advanced users. It draws inspiration from previous requests, the Community Wishlist Surveys, and gadgets and scripts. The work helped our code follow the standards and improve all other skins. We reduced PHP code in Wikimedia deployed skins by 75%. The project has also focused on making it easier to support gadgets and use APIs.

[Changes and test results] The skin introduces a series of changes that improve readability and usability. The new skin does not remove any functionality currently available on the Vector skin.

• The sticky header makes it easier to find tools that editors use often. It decreases scrolling to the top of the page by 16%.
• The new table of contents makes it easier to navigate to different sections. Readers and editors jumped to different sections of the page 50% more than with the old table of contents. It also looks a bit different on talk pages.
• The new search bar is easier to find and makes it easier to find the correct search result from the list. This increased the amount of searches started by 30% on the wikis we tested on.
• The skin does not negatively affect pageviews, edit rates, or account creation. There is evidence of increases in pageviews and account creation across partner communities.

How can editors change and customize this skin?

It's possible to configure and personalize our changes. We support volunteers who create new gadgets and user scripts. Check out our repository for a list of currently available customizations, or add your own.

[點解呢個改動有必要] 現時嘅預設畫面符合13年前嘅讀者同編者嘅需求。自此以嚟，有新嘅用户開始用維基媒體嘅各個網站，而 舊版Vector唔能夠滿足佢哋嘅需要。

[目標] 呢個新畫面嘅目標係整返個對讀者舒適、對編者實用嘅界面。靈感嚟自過往嘅請求、一年一度嘅社羣願望清單，以及啲架撐仔。過程中亦幫到我哋跟從標準同改善所有其他畫面。我哋減少咗75%維基媒體部署咗嘅畫面入面嘅PHP代碼。呢個專案亦都有專注令個畫面更容易支援啲架撐仔同用啲API。

[改動同測試結果] 呢個畫面引入咗一系列改善可讀性同可用性嘅改動，亦無移除任何舊版Vector現時有嘅功能。

我改咗睇過，暫時改返，我覺得 @SGrabarczuk (WMF) 提到嘅問題（視乎係乜問題，我唔知）未必同中文有關。

我覺得用窄熒幕嘅人（例如做文字工作，慣用 portrait mode 擺 mon 嘅人）應該轉下睇睇，佢哋喺爾方面嘅測試可能唔係好夠。

模分類求助

有幾個模而今冇正確分類⸺Template:lang-grc、Template:lang-he、Template:lang-ti⸺爾啲都係我改，只係轉咗模組版，等出到羅馬拼音。開咗模解，模同模解都係照 lang-ar 模格式照抄，對過好多次，睇極都唔覺有嘢抄錯，但係就係喺 Category:Lang-x 模冇出現。想請教高人我係做錯咗乜，係咪做嘢次序錯咗，定係系統出錯。麻煩嗮！（PS: Template:lang-am 本來都分咗類但係冇出，而今正常返，但係我唔知點解正常返。） Al12si (傾偈) 2023年3月10號 (五) 07:00 (UTC)

Graph extension disabled

Yesterday the Wikimedia Foundation noted that in the interests of the security of our users, the Graph extension was disabled. This means that pages that were formerly displaying graphs will now display a small blank area. To help readers understand this situation, communities can now define a brief message that can be displayed to readers in place of each graph until this is resolved. That message can be defined on each wiki at MediaWiki:Graph-disabled. Wikimedia Foundation staff are looking at options available and expected timelines. Automatic citations based on ISBN are broken

We have recently become unable to access the WorldCat API which provided the ability to generate citations using ISBN numbers. The Wikimedia Foundation's Editing team is investigating several options to restore the functionality, but will need to disable ISBN citation generation for now.

This affects citations made with the VisualEditor Automatic tab, and the use of the citoid API in gadgets and user scripts, such as the autofill button on refToolbar. Please note that all the other automatic ways of generating citations, including via URL or DOI, are still available.

You can keep updated on the situation via Phabricator, or by reading the next issues of m:Tech News. If you know of any users or groups who rely heavily on this feature (for instance, someone who has an upcoming editathon), I'd appreciate it if you shared this update with them.

ContentTranslation唔識連Wikidata

自從上面強制粵維啟用 ContentTranslation 功能後，似乎都吸引到人用，但發現有一個好大嘅缺陷，就係唔識連Wikidata。以呢篇黃大仙公共圖書館為例，編輯摘要寫到明「由翻譯版《黃大仙公共圖書館》去建立」，但篇文並未連結中維對應文章（而家見到有連，係因為我幫手連）。翻譯完某個語言版本後，自動連返去對應語言版本都好合理，唔知點解可以諗漏呢一步。 Alfakwan (傾偈) 2023年5月13號 (六) 04:48 (UTC)

除咗唔識連Wikidata，ContentTranslation可以話係完全唔理Wikidata。譬如有樣嘢個名叫A或者B，粵文已經用咗A個名開版並連結Wikidata，當有人想開B時， ContentTranslation一樣會叫人試下翻譯第二個語言嘅A，而唔識話「呢樣嘢已經有人開咗叫A嘅文，應該將B跳轉去A」，可能會導致人重覆開文。--Espotono (傾偈) 2023年5月25號 (四) 05:48 (UTC)

流動版Converter有bug？

Four other candidates were asked to participate as advisors.

Deploying the Phonos in-line audio player to your Wiki

This wiki will soon be able to use the inline audio player implemented by the Phonos extension. This is part of fulfilling a wishlist proposal of providing audio links that play on click.

With the inline audio player, you can add text-to-speech audio snippets to wiki pages by simply using a tag:

The above tag will show the text next to a speaker icon, and clicking on it will play the audio instantly without taking you to another page. A common example where you can use this feature is in adding pronunciation to words as illustrated on the English Wiktionary below.

對Vector 2022嘅意見

粵文版終於推行Vector 2022，試用一陣暫時都未見有大問題，最唔慣係開完版想連去其他語言時，㩒右上角個「加語言」係假嘅，原來要去右手邊「加跨語言連結」先至係真嘅。 Jason6698 (傾偈) 2023年8月9號 (三) 15:56 (UTC)

我認同，明明「加跨語言連結」同語言有關，但又唔放落「加語言」嘅範圍，確實有少少怪，不過呢個問題唔係粵文維基獨有，我見英文維基都係一樣。

針對粵文維基，我覺得最大問題係粵文維基有啲字未譯好，例如左邊「Main menu」，右邊「Tools」、「Actions」、「Subscribe」、「General」都需要譯返粵文。

Hey @Deryck Chan. Thanks for pinging me. When I click "Add languages", there's a link "Edit interlanguage links" which goes to Wikidata. What's the issue exactly, @Jason6698 and @Yaukasin? What I've described is not visible for you, or are you expecting something different?

@Jason6698, I agree that it's a pain. I've managed to find out that this task: T329570 documents this need. Some information is also in T282026 and T310259#8610478. Vector 2022 嘅問題喺窄熒幕比較明顯，如果有做開編輯或者設計所以因為工作需要熒幕擺咗打楝，應該會留意到 Vector 2022 嘅內文部分係窄到唔合理；佢本來問題冇咁嚴重，幾個月前（？）改咗左右都有 side menu，變咗唔係超闊熒幕根本用唔到。（我而今用 Timeless，對窄熒幕用家來講，介面算係最正常。）

呢個問題應該係冇解，係佢哋開發人員唔 check 熒幕夠唔夠位就亂擺嘢，迷信全世界都用緊打橫放嘅超闊熒幕。去 Fabricator 報問題亦根本係嘥時間。Al12si (傾偈) 2023年9月20號 (三) 20:49 (UTC)

I am pleased to share the next step in the Universal Code of Conduct work. The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) draft charter is now ready for your review.

The Enforcement Guidelines require a Building Committee form to draft a charter that outlines procedures and details for a global committee to be called the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C). Over the past few months, the U4C Building Committee worked together as a group to discuss and draft the U4C charter. The U4C Building Committee welcomes feedback about the draft charter now through 22 September 2023. After that date, the U4C Building Committee will revise the charter as needed and a community vote will open shortly afterward.

Temporary accounts for unregistered editors

Next year, unregistered editors will start using temporary accounts.

In 2024, editors who have not registered an account will automatically begin using temporary accounts. These editors are sometimes called "IP editors" because the IP address is displayed in the page history.

Coming soon: Reference Previews

A new feature is coming to your wiki soon: Reference Previews are popups for references. Such popups have existed on wikis as local gadgets for many years. Now there is a central solution, available on all wikis, and consistent with the PagePreviews feature.

Reference Previews will be visible to everyone, including readers. If you don’t want to see them, you can opt out. If you are using the gadgets Reference Tooltips or Navigation Popups, you won’t see Reference Previews unless you disable the gadget.

Reference Previews have been a beta feature on many wikis since 2019, and a default feature on some since 2021. Deployment is planned for November 22.

記得備份出面連結

想提下大家，每逢引用出面拎，除非係要打密碼先入到嗰隻，一定要去 Internet Archive 度 check 下佢哋有冇備份，冇就要撳備份掣整份備份；佢哋話會睇實維基百科有冇拎出去，有就自動備份，但係我呢半年嘅經驗係佢哋個系統非常之唔可靠（或者某種原因喺粵維根本唔 work，我懷疑同我哋網址 zh- 頭有關，佢哋唔信）。
